Tasmania’s eucalypt forests have the highest diversity of plants and animals of all of Tasmania’s habitats and they occur from the sandy soils of the coast to the snowy alpine peaks. Half the eucalypt species on this island are found nowhere else in the world.

Tree Hollows

When eucalypt trees reach 100 years old, their ancient branches will form hollows in which animals can nest and shelter. These hollows are important habitat for the endangered swift parrot and a variety of other creatures such as tiger quolls, possums and bats. The swift parrot (pictured below) migrates from the Australian mainland to Tasmania in August, where it breeds in the hollows of oldgrowth eucalypt trees.
